Energize What Fuels You: The journey to my PhD applied to life after a PhD

The year 2020 has been quite the year…

One positive that I take away from this crazy time, is the time I have had to sit with myself. To re-evaluate me. The journey that I have been on and where I came from is what fuels me. This past weekend, I read my acknowledgement I wrote for my PhD dissertation. It reminded me again to practice gratitude and to focus on the positive rather than giving energy to negative. I thought I would share in case someone else needs to be reminded to try (although it isn’t always easy) to give energy to what fuels you. After acknowledging my committee and chair for their guidance and support, I shared what keeps me moving forward, not only through a doctorate dissertation, but every day in life.

The Acknowledgement:

Writing this dissertation and conducting this research was nothing less than an honor.  I want to start acknowledgements with those who have helped shape me into the passionate person I am since day one; my family.  My dad and my mom have been my biggest supporters.   From the time we were kids, we learned the value of an education.  I am so fortunate that my parents raised us to be limitless women that are not deterred by doubt from others or failure.  In times when I felt defeated, I was always lifted by my mom and dad.  I’d like to acknowledge my sisters, my best friends, who were my biggest cheerleaders on long nights of research and writing; My beautiful baby girl, Kylah, who without knowing, was my constant motivation pushing me to make it to the finish line.  And last, but certainly not least, I would like to thank my grandmothers who are no longer with us but have shaped each and everyone one of us to be who we are.  From my Grandma (Aunt B), I like to think I have gained my strength and perseverance.  No matter what life obstacles are thrown my way, I refuse to quit because I know she did not.  From my Granny (Juanita), though her kindness can never be matched, I like to think I have learned how to be truly passionate and give genuine effort to make a difference for students and youth who are underserved, misrepresented and misunderstood.  These two strong women have left behind a legacy that will continue to grow through our family.

I would also like to thank Kim (Masked Name IV), who agreed to format my dissertation for me despite having a full-time faculty position.  Since I was a student-athlete at Texas Tech, I can recall Kim’s genuine kindness.  She truly is the epitome of a selfless person.   For me and many other former student-athletes, Kim has been the most consistent supporter and advocate.  This does not go unrecognized.  My extended family, Suzan and Steve Nunes, I thank you for those nights when you sat and listened to my defense presentation over and over and providing continuous positive input.   To the rest of my family, it truly takes a village, especially when writing your dissertation with a 3-year old full of energy.  You are all so appreciated!

My Kylah Charlie

Finally, I want to give a message to my daughter that she will understand one day soon: Kylah Charlie, you have such a bright light.  Mommy wants to thank you for the allowing me to grow with you.  Your positive energy is contagious and made me realize the importance and taking time to put things into perspective.  Times of doubt throughout this process were outweighed by the realization that I have you as my biggest blessing.  Please remember the value of education as you grow into the person you are becoming.   Live life to the fullest, knowing the you have the capability to conquer all your desires and have the ability to expand your knowledge with educating yourself in whatever you please.  Education is something that can never be taken away.  Use it as your tool baby girl!
